The potent part of my story begins during a meditation. I was on the porch of a remote rustic cabin in Waipio Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii. I was born and raised in Hawaii, and I have lived there all my life. In the valley I was surrounded by exotic fruit trees, streams of water, and wetland taro patches. The time-period was in the first week of January 2005, and I would be 23 years old in April of that year.
During my meditation there were hundreds of birds sounding off in unison around sunset, and I began to feel like I was communicating with them in my mind. It felt like my internal dialogue was having a conversation with the external environment. I could hear the rhythm of the birds and the wind blowing in the trees, synchronized to thoughts I was observing in my meditation.
As I was meditating on inner-outer communication, I began to hear neighboring animals such as dogs, crickets, roosters, horses, and pigs, all sounding off in a sort of symphony, that seemingly began all at once like a response to my meditative thoughts. It felt like a validation from the animals in the valley, like they were responding to my thoughts about communication. Subsequently, I had the thought that if everything outside of me is a sort of communication from spirit, or type of reflective symbolism, then every physical sensation I experience in my body is also a communication from spirit. Every good feeling and sensation, and every itch or pain, translating like a message from my soul to my body and mind.
Having this revelation, suddenly my meditation deepened, my thoughts seemed to vanish, and I was entranced by the sounds around me. An energy like an electric sensation moved quickly through me from the bottom of my spine to the top of my head. My spine cracked into place like a chiropractic adjustment, my ears popped, and my sinus cleared all at once. I felt surprised, amazed, perfect, top shape, better than I ever had before. It was as if time stopped for a moment, my body became light, and all fear, worry and doubt transformed into love and excitement.
What came next was so subtle, yet so profound and life changing, I don’t exactly have the words to describe what it means to me. I noticed a subtle tingling sensation on the top left side of my forehead. Because of my previous meditative thoughts, I assumed this was a subtle form of communication from spirit. I slowly turned my head in that direction looking to the left. Just as I looked left, a motion sensor porch light turned on and shown onto the wetland Taro patch next to the house. The porch light felt like a synchronous validation. I stood up and walked in that direction until I was standing ankle deep in the water of the Taro Patch where the light was shining. I then began to feel more tingling sensations moving around on various parts of my body intermittently as if they were directing me to slowly move my fingers, hands, arms, feet, legs, back, neck, and head. I moved my body with the direction of the sensations in slow thai chi or chi gong type movements (however, up to that point in my life I had been unfamiliar with chi movement practices).
For the next week I diligently followed these tingling sensations around the valley experiencing a constant state of meditative synchronicity. At times I moved extremely slowly. For example, when I felt the tingling sensation on my back, I interpreted it as suggesting that I slow down, and I would walk with very slow deliberate meditative movements, or wash dishes extremely slowly. I would often completely stop walking and perform various chi-like movements, depending on what I felt my tingling sensations were guiding me to do. It was a constant communicative adventure of figuring out what these sensations meant depending on where they manifested on my body. My body became like a map written in an obscure language, or an ancient navigational instrument, and it was my task to decipher or perhaps develop what each tingling location meant…
